History and Purpose of the Chapter

In response to an April 18, 1992 letter of invitation from the late Dr. Samuel K. James and Dr. Melvin Wright, Sr., thirteen men met to discuss how they and like men could help address the needs and problems of African American youth in West Tennessee. AS a result, the West Tennessee Chapter of 100 Black Men of America, Inc. was established. The chapter was chartered November 23, 1992, becoming the thirty second affiliate chapter of the 100 Black Men of America, Inc.

The Chapter of 100 Black Men of West Tennessee, Inc. was organized for the sole purpose of providing positive role models and mentors for African-American males. The chapter's mission is to nurture and enhance the growth, development and opportunities for young African-American males throughout West Tennessee. Chapter members are committed to making a positive difference in the lives of our youth and community.

Each chapter of the 100 Black Men of America, Inc. is committed to the goal to improve the chances of success for African-American youth by encouraging the attainment of higher levels of education and through greater exposure to career and societal opportunities. Mentoring is the core of the 100's focus. To this end, the "100" of West Tennessee has established the 21st Century Scholars Program as our premier education initiative and the F.A.M.I.L.Y. (Forming an Alliance to Mentor, Influence and Lead our Youth) Program as our major mentoring initiative. Our most recent initiative is a Partner In Education with Denmark Elementary School, Book Buddies Program.

The members of the 100 of West Tennessee, Inc. are truly "Real Men Giving Real Time" to our youth and community.
